Ethan Hawke gives a powerful performance as a pastor at a small church in upstate New York that is preparing for its 250th anniversary. After meeting with a troubled young man, though, he begins to question his faith and his life. Screenwriting legend Paul Schrader directs this elegant and intense film that evokes Bergman and Tarkovsky. It has received near-unanimous critical acclaim. Be forewarned, however: This film contains brief scenes of violent and disturbing imagery.
